By Tony Calvin - 15 September 2025
This morning, I have had another look at all the races that have been priced up, and absolutely nothing appeals as a bet at this stage.
I have updated the Ayr (note the Saturday forecast of 21mm, with the rain due to start at 1pm at the moment) and Newbury goings and weather for you, if you are interested in having a bet.
The courses have both dried out to good to soft, soft in places, overnight.
The Newbury forecast doesn’t look too bad, though they could get 6mm tomorrow
———-.
There were 252 in the Ayr Gold Cup (3.35pm) on Monday morning. Ain’t Nobody, Almeraq and Northern Ticker were the 8s co-favourites if you shopped around.
As at 11.59am, there were a mere 201 – and Almeraq wasn’t one of those, unsurprisingly so after that fall.
Northern Ticker is now the general 6s favourite. In fact, 6s across the board with everyone, including AKBets.
And, over at Newbury, there were 33 in the Group 2 Mill Reef (3.15pm). I don’t think there was an ante-post market on that race; if there was, it had disappeared by the time I looked.
As at 11.59am, there were nine confirmations and presumably one supplemented in the Mill Reef. so 10 in total.
They were Flying Comet, Gold Queen Kindly, Kilfrush Blue, Rock On Thunder, Rydale Frosty, Sands Of Spain, Watcha Snoop and the Charlie Appleby pair of Wise Approach and Words Of Truth – and that one unknown supplementary by the looks of it.
Aidan O’Brien hadn’t confirmed any of his three entries with a minute to go. And still hadn’t a minute later.
Wise Approach is the clear form horse (without knowing what has been supplemented), rated 114 after his Morny third, but he has never raced on anything officially slower than good (see going and weather below), something that Timeform agrees with.
Jim Boyle’s runaway course winner Into The Sky (and I am always wary of wide-margin winners here, for all he won in a very good time) is the most likely horse to have been supplemented (at a cost of £6,250).
Indeed, it is the horse in question, as I have just been pointed to a column on the Sporting Life website.
You can read the full article here – https://www.sportinglife.com/racing/news/into-the-sky-to-wear-new-colours-after-tabors-buy-into-jim-boyle-trained-juvenile/227589 – but Into The Sky will now carry the black and white silks of Doreen Tabor, wife of Michael, in partnership with Wilson and Stanbridge as he bids to get the new partnership off to a dream start in Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes back at Newbury this weekend.
Flying Comet is also entered at Ayr on Friday but, as at 3pm, no-one had priced the race up (named in honour of Geoff Lewis this season).
Actually, one firm has and they bet 15/8. 5/2, 11/4, 3s and 5s the first five in their betting….(Into The Sky is their fav in that highly attractive book).
Bookmakers have only priced up the Ayr Gold Cup at this stage (all firms are a quarter the odds 1,2,3,4) , and I am not inclined to get involved in any of the races ante-post, looking at their make-ups.
That obviously may change after I see the prices but I’d work on the basis of nothing doing at the moment.
Remember, there will be 25 runners in the Ayr Gold Cup on Saturday (and the Silver Cup), and the place terms that will generate. By the way, check out that updated Saturday forecast….
I may well be back tomorrow morning, though.
They have priced up the Ayr Gold Cup, the Doonside Cup and the Dubai Duty Free Handicap.
