Sussex Cup Preview
It was always going to be highly likely that Romeo Command was going to be suited by the 515m trip at Hove and Patrick Janssens charge has certainly taken a shine to the track with bold back-to-back wins in the Sussex Cup and he is fancied to produce his best form when it really does matter most by capturing the £10,000 decider at Hove on Saturday.
Romeo Command boasts a tremendous CV to his name and really does thrive in competitions. He has been moving off, but his draw on the rails ought to enable him to counter any significant early moves made by the others and given his middle gears are a match for any, that is where Romeo Command can go about his business.
Droopy Clue has shown why he was installed as ante-post favourite with gutsy victories of his own en route to the decider. A strong running sort who really does have it all, the scales would tip firmly in his favour should he get first crack at the likely pacesetters Clonda Uriel and Newinn Benni. Derek Knight did win this event last year and any jostling could bring his duo into the mix, but a clean run race will surely see the big guns holding the edge.
Cooladerry Dust was put up at 18-1 ante-post to win the £20,000 Regency and there is no reason why Nathan Hunt’s charge cannot cap off what has been a tremendous assault on this event.
A dog who has always been blessed with plenty of pace, it was his exploits in the Coronation Cup at Romford that seems to be the catalyst for him to make waves on the staying scene and also bring a bit of consistency to his game.
He has certainly relished the stiffer test of stamina, and if Cooladerry Dust can show the same urgency to turn in a prominent pitch out wide, he can turn the screw from halfway to open up a winning advantage. Baywatch Bullet looks set to control the inside runners and could be a hindrance or obstacle to the stamina-laden Bubbly Scorcher and Ballymac Taylor as they attempt to wind things up in the second half.
